Trinity Reads: Looking Back to Look Forward with Waubgeshig Rice

Book cover of "The Moon of the Crusted Snow"After a year of shared reading, Trinity Reads is excited to bring Waubgeshig Rice – the acclaimed author of our inaugural Trinity Reads title, Moon of the Crusted Snow – to wrap up the academic year with our campus community. In partnership with the Graham Library, the Indigenous Literatures Lab and First Nations House, we will host Waub for a special author talk on March 25 in Seeley Hall.

Waubgeshig Rice will take the stage forÌýLooking Back to Look Forward: The Origins of Moon of the Crusted Snow,Ìýdiscussing the actual historical events that inspired his bestselling novel Moon of the Crusted Snow, and how Anishinaabe culture and history inspire his vision for the future. He’ll share the research and development process behind the novel and its sequel, Moon of the Turning Leaves.

Waubgeshig RiceÌýgrew up in Wasauksing First Nation on Georgian Bay and now resides in Sudbury, Ontario. He’s the author of four fiction titles, most notably the novel Moon of the Crusted Snow and its sequel Moon of the Turning Leaves, published in 2018 and 2023 respectively. He holds a journalism degree from Toronto Metropolitan University, an honorary Doctorate of Letters from Nipissing University, and a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Trinity ReadsÌýembraces reading as a catalyst for change, offering students, staff, faculty and alumni a chance to read as a community and connect over big ideas in iconic Trinity spaces. To honour the addition of theÌýLawson Centre for Sustainability, this year’s shortlist featured books that engage with the environment in creative and compelling ways, with hundreds of community members attending literary gatherings leading up to the campus-wide vote that selected Moon of the Crusted Snow as our inaugural title.

Founded in 2024,ÌýÌýaims to foster cross-cultural understanding and support ethical engagements that inform Indigenous cultural integrity practices within reconciliation education initiatives.

Ìýprovides culturally relevant services to Indigenous students to support academic success, personal growth and leadership development. We offer learning opportunities for all students to engage with Indigenous communities at U of T and beyond.
