Service Workers (Part Time)

Appointment Type: Part Time Positions available

Hours of Work: Part Time (up to 24 hours per week); available to work evenings, weekends, and overtime as required; various shifts available.

ÌýRole Status:Ìý Positions are open due to existing vacancies.

Compensation Package: Compensation and terms/conditions of employment shall be based on the current collective agreement rate:

  • 60 day probationary rate: minimum $27.65 per hour
  • Post-probationary rate: minimum $27.85 per hour

Part time staff are eligible for 7% pay in lieu of benefits and participation in a defined benefit pension plan

Reports to: Assistant Director, Facility Services

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Facility Services, the Service Worker will be assigned specific tasks and duties related to cleaning, custodial, and service work according to assigned shift times, locations, and operational needs. ÌýThis position will also assist with the setting up of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences and events.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Regularly cleans and sanitizes washrooms using established practices and procedures:
    • Clean sinks, walls and partitions, toilets, urinals, mirrors, floors, metal fixtures, plumbing fixtures and faucets
  • Replenishes supplies and materials (i.e. paper towels, toilet paper, hand soap, sanitizers, etc.) as needed to receptacles within washrooms, kitchens, and other areas as required.
  • Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers.
  • Wash walls, windows, clean blinds and equipment; launder cleaning rags and dust mops.
  • Clean and make beds for residence guests in residence operations when necessary.
  • Use and maintain assigned ladders, power equipment and hand tools, buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, high pressure washers, high speed buffers and vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc.
  • Secure facilities when not in use, checking for unlocked doors, windows, and reporting unauthorized occupants.
  • Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies
  • Assist with the setting up of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, and events; move and reset furniture, as needed.
  • Remove debris and assist with snow removal around the entire campus, including from sidewalks and stairs in areas around buildings; use shovels, hand-operated tools, small power equipment or snow blowers, as needed.
  • Attend training as required in cleaning methods and techniques, new products, and workplace Health and Safety
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Educational and Experience requirements:

  • Grade 12 high school diploma or equivalent in education and experience.
  • Minimum 2 years previous cleaning experience.
  • Banquet and housekeeping experience in a hotel, residential, or academic setting is an asset.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to push, pull, lift and carry or move heavy items regularly (minimum 50 pounds), including lift and move furniture and safely operate cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to perform the diverse range of motions required for a variety of cleaning functions, including shoveling snow, cleaning, and clearing debris from building steps and surrounding areas, and continuous standing and walking.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) and appropriately with fellow workers, staff, and visitors.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to work a variety of shifts including evenings, weekends, and overtime.
  • Must wear assigned uniform and footwear when on duty.
